What We Have Learned and How We Apply It

Many of their students have enjoyed the way Tom and Russ learn from each other as they continue to expand their own perspectives on the system. While both of them provide meaningful and helpful workshops on their own, the interplay of their approaches creates something rich, unique and new.

In this workshop, Tom and Russ will share what they have found most productive and effective in working with the Enneagram through the years. They will each provide teachings, practices and exercises that they have found to be the most potent, and will explore ideas and discoveries that arise from their lively exchanges.

Temperament, Environment and the Patterns That Bind Us

We will delve into the question of “type as temperament” and its shaping by our childhood environment. We see these patterns not as causative of type, but as frequently found patterns that impact adult relationships and self-concepts.

We will look at the ways in which each type learns particular ways of coping with their emotions in an attempt to respond to the demands of their surroundings. We will also examine the ways stress and trauma impact each of the type patterns. This series will be of particular interest and use to those of us in the helping professions as psychotherapists, counselors or coaches.

Roots of the Enneagram: On Whose Shoulders Are We Standing?

One of the continuing questions that people have about the Enneagram is “where did this come from? It works so well, but who thought it up?” People often want to know if it is affiliated with particular religions, if it has a scientific element, and how it came into its present form. The answers to these questions are not simple because the Enneagram is really a modern synthesis of many older, traditional wisdom streams, as well as the work of a number of modern explorers and thinkers.

In this session, Russ will draw on his many years of experience, his firsthand connection with many of the key players, and his long study of the Enneagram to provide a sense of the roots of the system. While many may know some of the key names of the developers of the system or have heard something about its philosophical roots, Russ will go into some of the rich relationships and the broader story so that some of the pieces will make more sense and begin to fit together.

Love and Hate: Object Relations and the Enneagram in Key Relationships

Understanding Object Relations basically helps us see that every self-concept is matched with a concept of ‘other,’ and an emotional tone that tends to repeat itself in a pattern. This way of looking at the root of things is particularly powerful for understanding our dynamics in relationships and reveals reasons why we tend to keep getting into the same difficulties in our key relationships.

Attachment Theory, another way of looking at these patterns, has emerged from Object Relations in more recent years and sheds additional light on our habitual behaviors and reactions in our relationships. We will explore the relationship between the nine Enneagram points as they illuminate aspects of classic Object Relations Theory, and we will touch on the implications for modern Attachment Theory, paving the way for another class in the future.

Healing Relationships Using The Enneagram with Russ Hudson

One of the most interesting things about the Enneagram is the way that it looks at things triadically–in groups of three. Some of the triads are well-known, such as the triads connected with the three centers: instinctual, feeling, and thinking. Another potent triad called the Harmonic groups is actually one of the most interesting and helpful. Join me as I explain and explore the Harmonics groups which help us understand how we navigate conflicts and challenges.
